If you are an international student or exchange visitor in the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you MUST file Form 8843 – Statement for Exempt Individuals, even if you had zero income. Failing to comply with this requirement can lead to serious consequences, including IRS penalties, visa complications, or issues with future U.S. immigration applications.
Who is at Risk?
F-1, J-1, M-1, and Q-1 visa holders present in the U.S. at any point during the tax year.
Even if you made no money, you are still required to file Form 8843!
Dependents on F-2 or J-2 visas must also file separately.
